The Birth of Langley Pos-Abilities Society
The idea for this society came about 6 years ago but did not come to fruition until May 31, 2010 when Langley Pos-Abilities Society was incorporated under the Society Act of BC. Initially there was a contest to find the name and we had two winners. Our first event was a Fashion Show featuring able bodied and disabled models in June. It was a lot of fun and raised a few need dollars to start the organization.
Over the next few months presentations were made to the City, the Township, several Rotary Clubs as well as the Elks. The purpose was to introduce ourselves, state what we do and to solicit funds to get the work of the society up and running. We have received several donations of assistive devices from the community and are working with several clients to provide them with the equipment.
In the fall we held a Theatre Night in partnership with the Murrayville Players and earned a few more dollars. In late November we invited the Board of Directors of Civil Rights Now to do a presentation on how we can use our political voice to ensure equal rights for those of us with disabilities.
There are many things in the air at present and the mo9st exciting on is a “Blind Banquet” which will be coming up very shortly. Stay tuned for more details as to how you can help and where to get tickets.
